Mark Steel's "Lectures" on Geoffrey Chaucer No.1

I don't agree that reading Chaucer in the original language is that off-putting - but I take Mark's point. I like his fun approach to Chaucer and if it gets people interested - so be it!

Listening to Chaucer's poems in Middle English was amazing. I still needed a translation, but his poetry and the beauty of his words came across clearly for the first time.

I agree, Vic. Readers miss out on the nuances, irony, motifs and ambiguity with literal translations.

BTW all the best for the New Year for you and your excellent website. My students are currently studying "Pride and Prejudice". It's hardly necessary to add that they will be directed to your website.
